1. Thousand times peace by NordStream!
Poland Ready to Offer Germany ‘Alternative’ to Nord Stream 2

"Poland is ready to offer Germany access to its Baltic Pipe gas pipeline project in place of Nord Stream 2, Polish government spokesman Piotr Muller has said. “Poland has from the very beginning emphasized that European solidarity in this area should be unambiguous. Therefore, if such a need is expressed by the German side, Poland is open to the idea of using the infrastructure which it is building for its own energy security,” Muller said, speaking to Polish television."

"Comparing Apples and Oranges
On Tuesday, Polish energy expert Jakub Wiech told Republika TV that it was “pointless” to compare Baltic Pipe to Nord Stream 2, with the former meant mainly to allow Poland to reduce its dependence on supplies of Russian gas, while Nord Stream 2 has five times the capacity and the ability to send gas flowing deep into Europe."
No Nord Stream 2? No problem for Germany, economists say
By Vera Eckert, Paul Carrel, Tom Käckenhoff, SEPTEMBER 7, 2020

"FRANKFURT/BERLIN/DUESSELDORF (Reuters) - Abandoning the nearly complete Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia to Germany could create a legal mess and nudge up energy costs for European households but Germany would cope with any disruption to supplies, economists say."
"Knocking out that additional capacity would put upward pressure on gas prices. But reduced energy demand due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and slack in the German economy, would give Berlin time to work out alternative additional supply sources.
“Germany could easily afford it,” Berenberg Bank economist Holger Schmieding said of the possibility of axing the pipeline, describing the impact on economic output as “negligible”."
"But sourcing alternative energy supplies in the longer term - potentially from U.S. fracking gas, liquid gas from Russia and Qatar, or additional pipeline gas - would cost “billions of euros per year, which European consumers in particular would then have to pay,” Hermes said."
"The legal costs of abandoning Nord Stream 2 could also prove a major headache. The five Western partners in the 9.5 billion euro project led by Russia’s Gazprom would suffer massive writedowns should it be axed.
Half a dozen people familiar with the industry said pulling the plug would provoke a backlash from among the 120 firms involved in the project. Two of the people, including a specialist energy lawyer, forecast a raft of lawsuits."
4. Ukraine muss verzichten!
Name of Ukraine
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Name_of_Ukraine
"The name "Ukraine" (Ukrainian: Україна, romanized: Ukrayina [ʊkrɐˈjinɐ] (listen), ВкраїнаVkrayina [u̯krɐˈjinɐ]) was first used in reference to a part of the territory of Kyivan Rus in the 12th century. The name has been used in a variety of ways since the 12th century, referring to numerous lands on the border between Polish and Kyivan Rus territories."
Zaporozhian Cossacks
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zaporozhian_Cossacks
"It is not clear when the first Cossack communities on the Lower Dnieper began to form. There are signs and stories of similar people living in the Eurasian Steppe as early as the 12th century. At that time they were not called Cossacks, since cossack is a Turkic word meaning a "free man" which shares it etymology with the ethnic name "Kazakh". It later became a Ukrainian and Russian word for "freebooter.") The steppes to the north of the Black Sea were inhabited by nomadic tribes such as the Cumans, Pechenegs and Khazars. The role of these tribes in the ethnogenesis of the Cossacks is disputed, although later Cossack sources claimed Khazar origin."
"There were also groups of people who fled into these wild steppes from the cultivated lands of Kievan Rus' in order to escape oppression or criminal pursuit. Their lifestyle largely resembled that of the people now called Cossacks. They survived chiefly from hunting and fishing and raiding the Asiatic tribes for horses and food. In the 16th century, a great organizer, Dmytro Vyshnevetsky, a Ukrainian noble, united these different groups into a strong military organization."
"The Zaporozhian Cossacks had various social and ethnic origins but were predominantly made up of escaped serfs who preferred the dangerous freedom of the wild steppes, rather than life under the rule of Polish aristocrats. However, townspeople, lesser noblemen and even Crimean Tatarsalso became part of the Cossack host. They had to accept Eastern Orthodoxy as their religion and adopt its rituals and prayers."

Russia and Ukraine Reached Agreement on Gas Transit
Date: 25 December 2019
https://warsawinstitute.org/russia-ukraine-reached-agreement-gas-transit/
"The five-year contract for transit of Russian gas may be extended for ten more years. Russia will preserve gas transit through Ukrainian territory. The agreement foresees shipments of 65 billion cubic meters through Ukraine in 2020 and annual loads of 40 billion cubic meters over the next four years. Also, gas transit tariffs are set to see a slight increase, and, in 2019, Gazprom has paid $2.61 per 1,000 cubic meters of gas transportation through 100 kilometers of Ukrainian territory."
"After the launch of Russia’s two energy pipelines – Nord Stream and TurkStream – Ukraine will lose most of the gas transit through its territory and has now some time to get ready. Gazprom, for its part, won some time to complete its export projects that bypass Ukraine, and it seems it has managed to accomplish the goal at a relatively low cost."
"The Ukraine-Russia deal also includes payment by Russia of $2.9 billion to settle an arbitration claim arising from previous transit disputes. Ukraine should, therefore, waive new claims worth a total of $12 billion, despite Kiev’s great chance to win, and cancel of a $7.4 billion fine imposed on Gazprom by the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine. With the deal, Ukraine would no longer seek to seize Gazprom assets in Europe, and both parties could drop reciprocal court claims."
"Ukraine stopped importing gas directly from Russia in 2015, though it had made efforts to reduce imports since 2013. Kiev gets Russian gas indirectly through reverse flows from Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary. An extra reverse-flow point is expected to open with Romania on January 1. Resuming direct gas flows to Ukraine was high on Moscow’s list of priorities."

"Ukraine will receive around 15 billion U.S. dollars over five years of Russian gas transit, Ukrainian Energy and Environmental Protection Minister Oleksiy Orzhel said in his article for Economicheskaya Pravda media on Tuesday."
"The contract which ends after five years with a possible extension for ten years provides for guaranteed minimum transit volumes set at 65 billion cubic meters in 2020 and 40 billion cubic meters in 2021-2024 each. Also, the Russian side agreed to pay the compensation ruled by the Stockholm Arbitration, which amounts to 2.9 billion U.S. dollars."
Natural gas transmission system of Ukraine
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_gas_transmission_system_of_Ukraine
"The natural gas transmission system of Ukraine is a complex of natural gastransmission pipelines for gas import and transit in Ukraine. It is one of the largest gas transmission systems in the world.[1] The system is linked with natural gas transmission systems of Russia and Belarus on one hand, and with systems of Poland, Romania, Moldova, Hungary and Slovakia on other hand.[2] The system is owned by Government of Ukraine and operated by Ukrtransgaz.[3] Some local transmission lines together with distribution sets are owned by regional gas companies."
Nord Stream 2 spells pain for Ukraine
EUROPE / 14-01-20 / BY MADDY WHITE
https://www.gtreview.com/magazine/volume-18-issue-1/nord-stream-2-spells-pain-ukraine/
"Denmark’s Energy Agency approved a permit for the construction of a 147km section of the Nord Stream 2 twin pipeline system south-east of Danish island Bornholm at the end of October, in doing so defeating the last obstacle facing Russia’s Nord Stream 2 project. As it stands now, the pipeline will become operational in mid-2020."
"Nord Stream 2 is owned by Russian state-owned energy company Gazprom, which is the largest supplier of natural gas in the world, holding 16% of global natural gas reserves and 71% of Russian reserves."
"The first string was completed in 2011 and the second in 2012; it also has an annual capacity of 55bcm of gas. Nord Stream 2 will largely run parallel to the first Nord Stream system."
"Ukraine acts as the gatekeeper in the transfer of natural gas from Russia to Europe, but the completion of Nord Stream 2 will enable Russia to go through the Baltic Sea, bypassing Ukrainian land and the accompanying US$2-3bn-worth of transit fees every year. In 2018, Gazprom supplied Europe with more than 200bcm of gas, of which 87bcm went through Ukraine. The Nord Stream 2 route crosses the Exclusive Economic Zones or territorial waters of Russia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany instead of going via Ukraine like many Russian gas pipelines currently do."
"Evghenia Sleptsova, senior economist at Oxford Economics, tells GTR: “On the one hand, the Nord Stream 2 pipeline allows Russia to ensure a more undisrupted trouble-free supply stream to Europe and on the other, it is hurting Ukraine economically. It is a two birds with one stone situation. It will be painful for Ukraine to stop seeing transit flows through its territory.”"
"Another new gas pipeline threatening Ukraine is TurkStream, which stretches from Russia to Turkey through the Black Sea. Turkey is an important market for Russian gas, and it is the second biggest importer of Gazprom gas in Europe, behind Germany. The first and second strings of TurkStream will each have the capacity to transport 15.75bcm of gas a year."
"Since the start of operations in 2011, Nord Stream has steadily increased the volume of gas transported year by year, reaching pipeline capacity in 2018. In August 2019, the project hit a major milestone: more than 300bcm of natural gas delivered from Russia to the EU through the Baltic Sea.""
Ukraine skeptical of American LNG gas pipe dreams
Date 24.07.2020
https://www.dw.com/en/nord-stream-2-ukraine-united-states-lng-poland-fracking/a-54303274
"In May, the Ukrainian government preliminarily approved the text of a memorandum on the prospects for importing LNG from the US, with the supply of 5.5 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas annually over 20 years."
"Unconventional drilling technology like hydrauklic fracturing, or fracking, has created a boom in so-called shale oil and gas in the US, for which companies are now seeking new markets"
"Pricing seems to be the main sticking point with Naftohaz reportedly objecting to the US-proposed pricing formula which wants the US LNG price indexed to the Henry Hub natural gas price. But Naftohaz's newly appointed COO, Otto Waterlander, has pointed to the risk of a 20-year contract with no direct link to natural gas prices in Europe."
"A proposed 4 bcm floating storage regasification unit (FSRU) terminal project in Gdansk is expected to come online under the aegis of Poland's Gaz-System, but not before the end of 2025. Meanwhile, the existing gas interconnector between Poland and Ukraine — Drozdowicze — has capacity of only 2 bcm per year, and flows only to Ukraine."
"Apart from a lack of infrastructure, there are also mounting concerns about LNGE's ability to deliver the huge volumes of liquefied gas to Ukraine. The US company has no off-take agreements with existing or proposed export facilities in the US"
US LNG price up to 40% higher than Russian gas: Novak
27.05.2018 09:54 Murat Temizer
https://www.aa.com.tr/en/energy/energy-diplomacy/us-lng-price-up-to-40-higher-than-russian-gas-novak/20225
"According to Russian news agency Tass, Novak said that the U.S. wants Europe to buy its LNG but the price of which is at least 30-40 percent higher than Russia's piped gas.
Russia's President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that Russian pipeline systems linked to consumers in Europe don't have competitors.
"All our pipeline systems connected to main consumers in Europe do not actually have competitors if Europe certainly wants to remain competitive and does not want to buy at an exorbitant price from some other producers," Putin said.
Russia remained the EU's top supplier, covering 43 percent of total supplies, followed by Norway with 34 percent and LNG imports with 12 percent in 2017.
The U.S. LNG mainly goes to Asian market through spot contracts. However, in the coming years with more projects coming online, the U.S. is expected to become one of the main gas suppliers for Europe."
Low Prices Threaten US LNG Exports
June 12, 2109
https://www.energypolicy.columbia.edu/sites/default/files/pictures/ColumbiaUniversityCenterGlobalEnergyPolicy-wg190612_4.pdf
"US LNG export capacity is ramping up just as natural gas prices are hitting multiyear lows in Europe and Asia, prompting questions as to whether some US capacity might be shut in now the export arbitrage window has slammed shut. For the moment, analysts say there is little evidence of this happening. But if low prices persist, export curtailments look to be a real possibility — indeed, cargo tracking data shows that while 40 US cargoes loaded in both March and April, and 44 in May, only 22 have left or are scheduled to leave US ports out to Jun. 25."
